Ukraine is now dropping exploding killer ground robots out of bomber drones more than six miles behind Russian lines.

Apparently, giving drones their own explosives wasn't enough. Now the drones are delivering other drones, and these little robots are being sent into Russian rear areas specifically to attack positions and interfere with logistics.

The operation has a suitably dramatic name: Vivaldi. Ukraine's Third Army Corps says the offensive has already brought 125 square kilometers back under Ukrainian control, including 50 square kilometers recovered from Russian occupation.

And the strangest part may actually be what these machines are doing when they aren't blowing things up, because according to Ukrainian commanders, ground robots cleared 30 kilometers of mined routes in just two nights, without losing a single sapper.

So how exactly did Ukraine begin airlifting killer robots behind Russian lines, and could this change the way armies conduct offensive operations?

First, I examine Ukraine’s reported September 26 strike on the Azov Optical-Mechanical Plant in Russia’s Rostov region, a facility reportedly linked to components for at least seven Russian missile programs and described as the sole supplier of two essential Kh-101 components. The confirmed strike’s real damage and effect on missile output remain unverified, but it raises a consequential question: can targeted attacks create production bottlenecks in Russia’s long-range strike arsenal? I also assess claims that 14 Russian refineries are offline, nine are operating at reduced capacity, and 97 refinery strikes have occurred this year.

I then turn to Russia’s 170-drone attack, Ukraine’s reported decline in drone interception rates from 86–90% earlier in the year to roughly 70%, and the challenge posed by jet-powered Geran drones. A Ukrainian journalist got the chance to ask President Donald Trump three direct questions while President Zelenskyy and senior U.S. officials were sitting in the room: What happens with the Lindsey Graham sanctions bill? Will Trump press China? And will the United States move forward on possible Patriot missile production in Ukraine?

Trump said the sanctions legislation is being studied, indicated China would likely come up in discussions, and said talks about Patriot production were continuing. The timing matters because Dmitry Peskov responded the following morning with Moscow’s own message on Ukraine, negotiations, and the possibility of future U.S.-Russia meetings.

In this update, I walk through those exchanges in sequence and examine how the answers from Washington were followed by the Kremlin’s public position. Peskov accused Ukraine and Europe of moving away from peace negotiations, said Putin and Trump remain open to another meeting if necessary, and repeated Moscow’s position that Zelenskyy could come to Moscow for talks.

Industrial cranes are meant to build cities. In Iran, they are increasingly being used as gallows.

The public hangings of Amirhossein Safari and Abolfazl Sepahi in Isfahan have become a chilling symbol of Iran's escalating execution campaign. As the world focuses on war, Tehran is rapidly carrying out death sentences against protesters arrested during January's nationwide uprising.

I examine Ukraine’s reported overnight drone raid into Russia, including damage and disruption at Yandex’s Sosovo data center in the Ryazan region, drones pushing toward the Omsk refinery, and a fire at Gazprom Nevkhim Salavat in Bashkortostan. Omsk processes roughly 440,000 barrels per day and supplies major shares of Russia’s gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel; Salavat is also a major refining and petrochemical complex supporting Russian forces. On September 25, I examine reports of a large Ukrainian long-range drone operation across Russia, including fires at Lukoil’s Perm oil refinery—some 1,500 kilometers from Ukraine—and strikes on the Iskra electronics plant in Ulyanovsk. Iskra is reportedly tied to semiconductor components for Kh-59 missiles, Pantsir air defenses, radar, and communications equipment. Reported targets also included the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, a synthetic-rubber facility in Voronezh, a logistics site in occupied Luhansk, and two radar stations in Rostov.

I compare this dispersed strike pattern with Russia’s overnight drone and missile attacks on Ukraine, including the deadly strike on a Kyiv residential high-rise and reported casualties in Kharkiv Oblast. I also assess airport disruptions, air-defense pressure, the earlier Kuibyshev refinery damage, and Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian logistics on the Zaporizhzhia front. The strategic issue is whether repeated, clustered drone raids can impose sustained costs on Russia’s oil, defense-industrial, and logistics networks.

HUGE day for Ukraine.
I examine an extraordinary day of reported Ukrainian operations: strikes on four oil depots in Krasnodar Krai, defense plants in Tula and Voronezh, and Russian drone, radar, electronic-warfare, air-defense, and maritime assets. Ukraine says seven refineries were hit over the preceding week at ranges of up to 1,600 kilometers behind the front. I assess why sustained pressure on fuel distribution, air defense, and drone infrastructure could impose costs well beyond any single strike.

I also break down Operation Vivaldi near Liman, where Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps says it captured more than 250 Russian personnel after trapping forces west of the Zherebets River. Ukrainian reporting listed 2,090 Russian casualties for the day, alongside major equipment losses, while Russian attacks killed civilians and damaged sites across multiple Ukrainian regions. The strategic issue is whether deep strikes and battlefield deception can translate into lasting operational leverage.
