Ukraine is mourning after a devastating day of Russian strikes. In Kryvyi Rih, the confirmed toll from the attack on a shopping mall rose to 15 killed and 130 injured, including 23 children. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack and said Ukraine will respond.
The violence extended beyond Kryvyi Rih. A drone struck a minibus in Zaporizhzhia, while a Shahed attack on a multipurpose building in Tokarivka in the Mykolaiv region killed four people, including three boys. Against that backdrop, Ukraine also revealed the first batch of the Alexa Spatium interceptor drone—a mobile, turbojet-powered system designed to counter Russian kamikaze and Shahed-type drones and capable of returning for reuse if an interception is unsuccessful.

Russia’s latest strikes on Ukraine killed 16 people and wounded nearly 50, while President Zelenskyy says Ukraine will answer with a justified and decisive response. In this update, I break down what happened, why Ukraine’s current long-range operations are not yet the promised retaliation, and why the continuing shortage of Patriot interceptors remains so dangerous.
We also look at a major new threat from North Korea: the KN-30 heavy ballistic missile, which Ukrainian defense intelligence reports can carry a warhead of up to 2.5 tons and reach roughly 900 kilometers. I also examine Russia’s missile stockpiles and production as Ukraine faces the continuing challenge of defending its cities from ballistic attacks.
Then we go inside Russia itself. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak openly describes a “tense” second phase in Russia’s gasoline market, including export restrictions, fuel imports, refinery problems, and authorization for lower-grade fuel. Russian television also delivers another revealing moment as Popov describes personally witnessing three Ukrainian strikes while traveling through Crimea.
Ukraine needs air defense, but the pressure Ukraine is applying against Russia is also producing increasingly visible consequences. We look at both sides of that reality—and what it could mean next.

A deadly confrontation between members of Ukraine’s Security Service and Defense Intelligence erupted in broad daylight in Kyiv, leaving one GUR member dead and two wounded. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the incident “absolutely disgraceful” and demanded a full investigation, accountability, and personnel decisions after the facts are established.
In this video, we examine Zelenskyy’s response and the account given by a GUR Timur unit commander, who said a GUR serviceman had been detained without formal charges and alleged that SBU personnel later opened fire without warning. The Prosecutor General and State Bureau of Investigation are now tasked with determining exactly what happened between two institutions that remain essential to Ukraine’s defense.
We also look at Zelenskyy’s warning about dangerous conditions in Russian airspace as disruptions hit Moscow-area airports, including Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo. Ukraine endured an extremely dangerous day of Russian attacks stretching from western regions to the front-line areas, with ballistic strikes hitting Odesa and parts of the city losing power. President Zelenskyy warned that Russia is preparing to intensify attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure as the country moves toward fall and winter.
In this update, I break down the scale of the attacks, including more than 500 Russian attack drones reported during the day, the suspension of rail service into Sumy, strikes on civilian and economic targets, and the growing pressure from sharply rising fuel prices. At the same time, Ukraine continued striking military bases and industrial targets supporting Russia’s war effort.
We also look at Vladimir Putin’s latest warnings about European troops in Ukraine, the response from Peskov and Lavrov, Zelenskyy’s warning that attacks on Ukraine’s energy system will receive a response, and the increasingly hostile rhetoric surrounding possible negotiations. A Ukrainian journalist got the chance to ask President Donald Trump three direct questions while President Zelenskyy and senior U.S. officials were sitting in the room: What happens with the Lindsey Graham sanctions bill? Will Trump press China? And will the United States move forward on possible Patriot missile production in Ukraine?
Trump said the sanctions legislation is being studied, indicated China would likely come up in discussions, and said talks about Patriot production were continuing. The timing matters because Dmitry Peskov responded the following morning with Moscow’s own message on Ukraine, negotiations, and the possibility of future U.S.-Russia meetings.
In this update, I walk through those exchanges in sequence and examine how the answers from Washington were followed by the Kremlin’s public position. Peskov accused Ukraine and Europe of moving away from peace negotiations, said Putin and Trump remain open to another meeting if necessary, and repeated Moscow’s position that Zelenskyy could come to Moscow for talks.
