Today, there are important updates from the Liman direction.

Here, the manpower scale of Russia’s defeat around Liman is becoming clearer, as Ukraine’s Third Army Corps has officially confirmed the amount of Russian casualties during the third phase of Operation Vivaldi. According to Corps commander Andrii Biletskyi, Russian personnel losses during this phase reached more than two thousand, while more than two-hundred-and-fifty Russian soldiers were captured.

Entire Russian groups surrendered, including officers, drone operators, and artillerymen, with Ukrainian footage showing dozens of prisoners assembled together, demonstrating that Russia had committed substantial forces to defending the bridgehead rather than merely scattering small infiltration groups throughout it, as the Russian command reported.

More importantly, these are nowhere near the final figures for Operation Vivaldi, as they represent Ukraine’s officially announced Russian losses from the third phase alone. The psychological consequences prove even more devastating, as Russian forces spent more than a year brutally grinding toward Liman and trying to transform their bridgehead into a launchpad for encircling the city. Russian soldiers repeatedly crossed deadly supply routes, fought for devastated forest positions, and suffered enormous casualties to seize territory that Ukrainian forces have now torn away from them in only a matter of weeks.

Watching those gains disappear severely undermines confidence among Russian troops expected to continue fighting, as they believed they were participating in a sustained advance, only to find themselves withdrawing, isolated or surrounded while Ukrainian assault formations take positions their units spent months capturing. This underlines the importance of entire Russian groups surrendering, with continued resistance judged pointless once Ukrainian troops penetrated Russian defenses and disrupted their logistics.

There is another reason the eventual Russian losses could be substantially different from the numbers currently public, as Ukraine continues to withhold operational information. Operation Vivaldi was conducted under an extensive information blackout, and Ukrainian commanders have repeatedly delayed announcing advances until they no longer created operational risk. Consequently, official information continues to lag behind events on the battlefield.

That delay itself creates military advantages, because if Russian commanders believe their withdrawal preserved more combat power than it actually did, they may overestimate the strength of their new positions farther east behind the river. Units assumed to have successfully escaped have suffered casualties instead, become dispersed or surrendered, with the resulting discrepancy producing incorrect decisions about available reserves. Russian commanders might even believe they possess enough infantry to defend crossings and positions around the Zherebets River or, more dangerously, they could conclude that sufficient combat power remains for counterattacks intended to restore part of the lost bridgehead. Ukraine would then be facing formations weaker than Russian headquarters believe them to be.

The confirmed prisoner-of-war numbers therefore reveal something larger than captured manpower, as more than two-hundred-and-fifty soldiers surrendering during one phase represents a considerable breakdown in Russia’s ability to maintain isolated positions once Ukrainian forces penetrated the bridgehead. Operation Vivaldi consequently extends far beyond territory changing hands, as Ukraine has pushed Russian forces away from Liman, dismantled positions built through months of offensive operations, and inflicted a major manpower cost, as hundreds of Russian troops have surrendered rather than continue defending those gains.

Overall, the precise final casualty and prisoner totals remain unknown and should not be assumed before Ukraine releases them officially. But the third phase alone demonstrates the scale of the reversal. For Russian soldiers who watched enormous resources spent creating this bridgehead, only to see it dismantled within weeks, Vivaldi represents something harder to replace than territory: confidence that all those previous sacrifices produced lasting gains.

Ukraine is now dropping exploding killer ground robots out of bomber drones more than six miles behind Russian lines.

Apparently, giving drones their own explosives wasn't enough. Now the drones are delivering other drones, and these little robots are being sent into Russian rear areas specifically to attack positions and interfere with logistics.

The operation has a suitably dramatic name: Vivaldi. Ukraine's Third Army Corps says the offensive has already brought 125 square kilometers back under Ukrainian control, including 50 square kilometers recovered from Russian occupation.

And the strangest part may actually be what these machines are doing when they aren't blowing things up, because according to Ukrainian commanders, ground robots cleared 30 kilometers of mined routes in just two nights, without losing a single sapper.

So how exactly did Ukraine begin airlifting killer robots behind Russian lines, and could this change the way armies conduct offensive operations?

In the first eleven days of the protests, from 28 December 2025 to 7 January 2026, Iranians took to the streets in towns and cities across the country. This is their story.

It begins in Tehran's bazaar, where the sharp fall of the rial and the soaring price of the dollar brought people onto the streets. Over the following days the protests spread across Iran. I examine an extraordinary day of reported Ukrainian operations: strikes on four oil depots in Krasnodar Krai, defense plants in Tula and Voronezh, and Russian drone, radar, electronic-warfare, air-defense, and maritime assets. Iran has unleashed a terrifying campaign of revenge attacks across the UK and Europe – including bombings, cyber attacks and knife rampages.

The mullah regime is suspected to have orchestrated the alleged RAF Fairford terrorist plot – as Tehran puts Britain squarely in its crosshairs.

The latest alleged terror attack is another indication Iran has already planted sleeper cells in the UK, security expert Will Geddes said.

This morning, UK Airbase RAF Fairford, which currently houses U.S. strategic bombers, was approached by several unknown vans that allegedly intended to attack the base. First, I examine Ukraine’s reported September 26 strike on the Azov Optical-Mechanical Plant in Russia’s Rostov region, a facility reportedly linked to components for at least seven Russian missile programs and described as the sole supplier of two essential Kh-101 components. The confirmed strike’s real damage and effect on missile output remain unverified, but it raises a consequential question: can targeted attacks create production bottlenecks in Russia’s long-range strike arsenal? I also assess claims that 14 Russian refineries are offline, nine are operating at reduced capacity, and 97 refinery strikes have occurred this year.

I then turn to Russia’s 170-drone attack, Ukraine’s reported decline in drone interception rates from 86–90% earlier in the year to roughly 70%, and the challenge posed by jet-powered Geran drones. The strategic issue is not whether NATO should react impulsively to every Russian action; it is whether repeated drone incursions, aggressive flight paths, and hybrid operations can gradually raise the threshold for an allied response. The Institute for the Study of War warns that such normalization could create tactical surprise.

US intelligence has warned several European governments that Russia may be preparing a drone operation targeting Spain, France, or Italy. The suspected plan involves concealing Gerbera drones inside containers aboard merchant ships and launching them from the sea. The threat is particularly serious because these countries are far beyond the range of drones launched from Russian territory. Merchant ships could provide Russia with covert, mobile launch platforms much closer to southern Europe, allowing drones to approach targets from unexpected directions, which Nato countries didn’t expect any attacks from. This could bring normally distant European targets within range without requiring Russia to establish a permanent military base abroad.

To conduct these strikes, Russia would use Gerbera drones that can fly around six hundred kilometres and carry a five kilogram explosive payload. These drones could be launched against airports, military facilities, or critical infrastructure near the coast. Because of the relatively small payload, the drones wouldn’t cause widespread destruction, but it is more than enough to damage key parts of Nato’s infrastructure and paralyze them. A ship positioned several hundred kilometres offshore could launch the drones without entering a Nato country’s territorial waters, making preparations for the attack more difficult to detect. 

Russia’s broader objective is not to start a full scale war with Nato, but to test how the alliance would respond to a limited attack while exploiting existing divisions within Europe. A carefully controlled drone operation could create public fear and expose weaknesses in southern Europe’s air defenses. Depending on its scale, an attack could force Nato members to move additional air defense systems towards southern Europe, leaving fewer systems and interceptors available for the eastern flank and Ukraine. Launching the drones from a civilian ship would also make it harder to prove that Russia ordered the attack, creating uncertainty over how Nato should respond. Moscow could use this political uncertainty surrounding such an attack to test Nato’s willingness to invoke Article five, the collective defense clause, and assess how united European governments would remain under pressure. 

This type of drone attack would cause major problems for Nato because finding one armed vessel among three thousand regular merchant ships that sail through the Mediterranean Sea every day would be almost impossible. This tactic would also give Russia plausible deniability, because it could deny controlling the ship after an attack, while Western investigators would try to trace the vessel and its ownership. A foreign flagged vessel, several companies involved in its ownership, and cargo moved through different ports could make the operation more difficult to trace back to Russia. Nato would therefore need strong evidence before seizing the vessel or responding against Russia, as its members could not simply search every suspicious merchant ship travelling through international waters. Detecting the operation beforehand would require Nato to track suspicious cargo, port visits, and changes in ship ownership across several countries. Russia could move the drones through companies or intermediaries in third countries before loading them onto civilian ships, greatly expanding the number of routes Nato would need to monitor.

Overall, turning merchant ships into mobile launch platforms would allow Russia to threaten southern Europe without building permanent bases or openly deploying military forces abroad. Nato would then have to connect naval surveillance, port inspections, coastal security, and air defense because stopping these attacks would begin long before the drones entered European airspace. However, stricter inspections of suspicious vessels could slow commercial traffic and create disputes with neutral countries, meaning Moscow could cause economic and political pressure even if only a few drones were launched. The lasting effect would be to erase the old division between military threats in eastern Europe and civilian shipping routes in the south, forcing Nato to defend both at the same time.
