Trump cancels Iran war meeting after Tehran refuses direct talks; Hormuz Strait standoff continues

Progress toward a diplomatic resolution in the war with Iran stalled Saturday, with President Trump announcing that envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would not take part in continuing negotiations brokered by Pakistan.

Trump's reversal followed a rapid departure from the talks in Islamabad by the Iranian delegation. Face-to-face talks between the adversaries had not been planned, but the Trump administration had confirmed that it would take part in this second round of meetings indirectly on Friday.

The apparent setback followed a week that saw seizures of vessels at sea by both sides, in acts aimed to control shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
